Also note that the snare track sends to the snare reverb track pre-fx, so there's a pitch shifter in there which should be matched to the snare track. Enjoy and make it your own!Įdit: Play around with the wet/dry levels on the compressors if you want to open or tighten up individual parts. If you want to use your own reverb/delay in this template, remember to set their mixes to 100% wet so you don't double the actual track. I wanted a fuller sound to the cymbals and tried to mimic the spread-out, washy sound of an overhead mic picking up reflections and room noise.

Adds a (default muted) 'kick emphasis' which is basically just a low tone generator with a gate triggered by the normal kick for an extra fat low end.Adds some additive EQ to a few of the tracks.Puts individualized subtractive EQ and compression on each track.Breaks out drum kit pieces to individual tracks (you still write MIDI on just one track).Puts a compressor, peak limiter, and colorful EQ on the bus.I can't remember where I got it from, but thanks anyway! I actually started with someone else's template which had all of the routing in place, but no effects. The basic kit sounds very clean and modern to me (not my thing!), so EQing was a must.

Plus I was limited to only putting reverb on the whole track and couldn't EQ individual parts. The VST has some minimal mixing, panning, and compression features, but I didn't want to dive into that each time I wanted to tweak something. So why did I make a template? Well, if you simply plug the drum kit in and start adding MIDI then everything is sitting there on one track.

All of the plugins are FREE and I'm pretty sure you can find most all of them on KVRaudio. Here it is again without the overdrives and without anything besides routing and built-in Reaper effects (you'll have to add reverb, delay, etc yourself). It uses the following plugins: Vladg/sound limiter no 6, Variety of Sound (BootEQmkII, NastyDLAmkII), Stone Voices ambient reverb, and some overdrives (TSE audio 808, Wampler cranked ac, Dead Duck overdrive, Distortique face bender, HY Plugins hy-lofi2). I didn't spend that much time integrating the drums into the music, so it is what it is.
I tried to get the volumes as close as possible by ear and meter, but I'm sure I'm off a bit. Then we're back to the original kit in the mix, and again to my kit at 1:12.
My edited kit comes in seamlessly at 0:25. The only other effect is a hard limiter on the master FX.
The standard kit (with a little room reverb) starts at the beginning and runs through some grooves. You can listen to this first to see if you even care to go on. So take it for what it's worth and tweak it to your liking. The caveat is that I'm not an all-knowing master mixer with years of experience. So I figured it'd help more people out if it got the visibility of its own post. I offered to share my drum template for MT Power Drum Kit in another post and there was interest.
